Reflexively all three of them formed a three man barrier between the threat and their home, each aimed down range ready to fire. Their quick and crisp movements were practiced in their personal drills since they first decided on their hobby. The gun range for accuracy and technical knowledge, paintball for group formation and tactics, sparring for close quarter combat, and all the studying they ever really focused on was for this moment. They all knew in their heart what they were preparing for, their desire to be prepared for everyone's sake. Still, it didn't stop the jitters in their hands.

They stood there, waiting for the impending attack to come, the dominant sound of their hearts pounding drowned out the moaning. They didn't approach, they just walked aimlessly. Jaden held his finger on the trigger, tempted to to fire, but there was one thing that exceeded his desire to shoot them, opportunity. Jaden held up his fist, without a word Jason and Eddi held their position, aim fixed on the enemy. Jaden slung his rifle over his shoulder, and made his way to the other end of the street, the group of zombies now entering the coldesac area. Even with all his gear on, Jaden moved without a sound, careful not to jumble his rifle against the swords on his back. He stopped at the lightpost that stood at the home across from his own, his eyes fixed on the zombies, who were now standing between him and his comrades. Jaden then did something unexpected. Eddy was fighting not to laugh as Jaden started waving his arms like a spaz, making as much movement as he could without noise. The zombies, pale and decaying, didn't move. They took no notice to him. Jaden ceased, then went to test two. He rapped his knuckles against the light pole, a low ding rang out...Jaden quickly raised his rifle as the zombies took to a new look, a swarm. They picked up their speed, which was no more than a sluggish speed walk, but the added groaning thirst for his flesh made the threat all the more terrifying. Jaden clicked the safety on his rifle to a setting for single shot, aimed for the closest one to him and squeezed the trigger tight. His rifle gave off a muffled cough, followed by the bullet blasting a hole through the first zombies head. 4 more fell as Eddi and Jason supported him. Blood and brain matter splattered all over the street, but undetered, the zombies continued their pursuit on Jaden. In 4 more shots the remaining fell and tied, bullet holes in the head. Jaden let out a breath he had held, crisis averted. "JADEN DOWN!" In reflex Jaden dove forward and rolled onto his back, as he turned to face behind him, he saw his neighbors head explode.

Jaden breathed deep, paralyzed by his own relization. He KNEW this things. They hold the faces of those he once called friend, family, neighbor, now he calls them creature, enemy, target. Jaden looked blankly at the sky though his mask, shades of red spotted his visor, Jason and Eddy ran in pulling on his arms. Jaden was lifted to his feet, his rifle held in his right hand. "Jaden you ok?" Eddy's voice finally registered, Jaden pulled off his mask and started wiping off the blood. Jason walked over to what used to be my neighbor, Ms. Hong, "Must have been able to hear the rifles going off, drew her out of the house." Then an old familiar voice came from behind, "The hell happened out here?!" They turned back to see Gramps hustling up to them, old 12-gauge shotgun in hand.

"First contact basically." Jaden spoke finally, he looked hard at the 12 gauge in gramps's hand, "Don't fire that thing, they're drawn by sound so you'll herd them from all over." Gramps turned his hustle into a slow walk. "Well shit, but how about yours? They're silenced but they still make noise." As a matter of fact they did, silenced weapons still made a distinct sound of a gunshot. Jason retorted, "The noise they make is no more than Jaden tapping on the streetlight there. We should be good using these," Jason indicated the supressed Saga-Shotgun in Eddies hand and the surpressed AK's he and Jaden had. Jaden deducted it was Eddi who shot Ms. Hong, or what used to be her. "Well I can make a suppresser for this badboy-" Jaden cut off gramps with determination in his voice, "They're at my sisters complex, I need to get her, I need the truck." It didn't take Gramps more than a second to surmise Jaden's urgency, then he produced some keys and tossed them to Jaden. Jaden hefted the keys, singling out the right one, "Jason go back to the house and grab the bows," Jaden was referring to the bows they had used the day before, "Then you and me are going to get her. Gramps I need you to stay here and guard the coldesack while Eddi goes for the supplies." Jaden handed him his AK. Gramps hefted the rifle and grunted with approval. Eddi was already reving up his pickup and rolled out for his destination. Jason disappeared into the house and Gramps took up a position in the center of the street. Jaden ran off to Gramp's house, entering the garage from the side entrance, his heart racing, urging him to get to the apartment. In the garage sat an old series Hummer, Gramps never drove it but he always kept it fueled and ready, spare gas stocked in the garage as well, precariously next to Gramp's own collected armory. Jaden entered the vehicle and popped the garage open, when he ignited the engine and the truck rolled to life, he remembered exactly how loud the old truck was. He went slow on the accelerator and eased it down over to his house, just as he stopped, Jason hustled out with both bows strung over his shoulder, as well as a satchel of something. Jaden watched as Jason tossed the satchel over to Gramps and then hustled over to the hummer, tossed the bows in the back seat and took the passenger seat. "Whats in the bag?" Jason smirked, "A lawn chair. Gramps is an old man." Jaden lightly chuckled as he saw the sour look on Gramps face as he unfollded the collapsable chair and sat down. Jaden didn't wait another minute, he slowly edged the hummer out of the street and down the road, slowly increasing his speed as he gained distance from his home

The drive opened up a whole new perspective. As they drove closer to the main street of town, the more they saw of THEM. Vehicles were abandoned all through the streets, some were just left there, some were painted with gore. As Jaden drove down the hill his house was positioned on he could see some of the main stores were a wreck, one on fire, luckily it was only a shoe store they thought. the streets grew more and more dense with zombies, and running them over would wreck the hummer in no time. Jaden diverted his path to cut across the open fields to move around the collection of THEM. The THEM, as they had come to identify, were the mass hordes of what were people. Not one person was living...completely that is. Evidence of bites, scratches or torn flesh could be seen on all of the victims. Blood protruded from their mouths and the snarled their ragged teeth at the hummer as it drove past. Jaden kept himself at a safe distance from the zombies, occasionally glancing off one or two, splattering the windshield with blood and flesh. Looking in the rearview mirror he could see some of THEM were following them, slowly, but deliberately after the hummer. "I wonder far they'll chase us." "We'll they may give up once they lose sight of us....maybe." Jason was obviously nervous, "Fact is there are 40,000 people in this town alone, I'm counting about 300 since we left." Jason asked with question. "So the question is, the hell is everyone else?" Jason sighed and gripped the door frame as Jaden rolled the hummer back onto the street and made rapid right and left turns through the crowd of zombies. Jason relaxed as they sped down the final stretch of road, 4 miles till they reached the apartment complex. "We'll I've got a few theories," "Shoot." "One: Everyone evacuated or tried, I'll bet they were trapped on the freeways, so the freeway will be a death zone of those fuckers. Two: People are hiding in their homes, wait for the military to come save them, but the military is spread too thin right now, I wager Edwards Air Force Base evacuated as many as they could fit on the planes and hightailed it." "They should be back though," Jaden frowned at the thought that his fellow Air Force comrades would abandon everyone. "Not by choice I'm sure, if these freaks are littering the runway then they can't land." Jason continued, "Three: people are running on their own, fortifying secluded areas and wait it out...is that what you plan to do?" Jaden took two deep breaths, "Yes" "Why? Jaden I'll follow you to hell man, but this IS hell right now. So why stay? We can escape no prob-" "Yes WE can...but what about the girls?" Jason looked discouraged, "We've trained for years for something like this, we have food rations, weapons, shelter. We can survive, but also..." "Also?" Jaden looked out over his city, the homes, the stores, "I won't abandon whoever is left behind. That's the plan Jason, WE have to be the ones to hold firm, we are the new architects of this city, we can restore this place, but only if we hold together." Jason looked heavily at Jaden, "Thats pretty bold Jaden...Hell I'm in." Jaden grinned, then his grin fadded as he turned left to the apartment building, and saw at least 30 of THEM in front of it.

30 was the understatement of the day, the real phrase was that there were 30 that couldn't fit in the appartment. Jaden took to analysis that many, MANY, more had already packed themselves into the entryway and corridors till they met nothing but walls and unopened doors...meaning people were still alive in there. Jason and Jaden held their breaths, the hummers engine rumbled. They watched as 1...3...4 of the walking dead turn their attention to them.

Jaden and Jason had about 50 arrows total, they couldn't take them all on, even with Jason's AK. Jaden's time to plan kept widdling away as now 20 of them turned their attention to the Hummer. Jaden killed the engine and opened the door slightly; they were drawn to sound, so he just needed to make a new sound for them to focus on. Reaching into the center console of the hummer, Jaden produced a flare gun and aimed it at the cars still parked around the appartment, specfically the ones away from the entrance to the apartment. Jaden pulled the trigger and a small rocket brightly shot out, a high screach emmitting from it. The rocket smashed through the window of a parked truck and detonated, the shockwave setting off the car alarm. The zombies paused like you would in Marco Polo, and turned their direction to the truck instead.
